What to See at Tsavo East & West

Tsavo West boasts the tranquil Mzima Springs, a hidden gem amid the park’s rugged terrain. Here, on palm-shaded riverbanks, vibrant birds, fish, crocodiles, and hippos thrive in millions of gallons of freshwater.

Compared to the vast Tsavo Parks, Amboseli is a compact yet vibrant sanctuary, making wildlife spotting easy. Tsavo East’s expansive landscape, characterized by its reddish soil, is favored by elephants, giving them a delightful rosy complexion.

5 Hour Drive

6:00 am – Your adventure commences as your driver/guide picks you up early in a private 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep. You’ll head to Mombasa via the Likoni Channel ferry, embarking on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway as the African sun bathes the land in golden hues.

Opportunities for rest stops and refreshments abound along the way. By lunchtime, you should arrive at Tsavo West. After refreshing at your accommodation, gear up for an afternoon of game drives. Seek out the park’s impressive wildlife, and in the late afternoon, journey to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, home to over 80 of these unique and elusive creatures. With some luck, you might spot a few.

As the sun sets, return to your safari lodge or tented camp for a relaxing dinner and well-deserved rest.

2 ½ Hour Drive

Rise with the birds, or even before, to catch the mesmerizing sunrise and the gentle illumination of the park’s rolling hills. This peaceful time is perfect for connecting with nature.

You’ll venture to Mzima Springs, leaving your 4 x 4 behind to stroll along the cool, shaded banks. Keep your eyes peeled for hippos, crocodiles, and other wildlife drawn to the crystal-clear waters.

Then, partake in a final game drive through Tsavo West as you exit, heading towards Amboseli. The towering presence of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance signals your proximity to the park.

The afternoon invites leisurely game drives, promising encounters with free-ranging elephants set against the backdrop of the great mountain. Amboseli is also home to a nearby Maasai village, offering an optional cultural tour where you can meet indigenous people and delve into their unique way of life.

As late afternoon approaches, the clouds veiling Kilimanjaro’s peak may disperse, revealing its snow-capped summit. Have your camera ready to capture this awe-inspiring sight. Dinner and relaxation await at your Amboseli accommodation.

Rise early, not only to witness the sunrise but also, weather permitting, the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro. Start your day with a morning game drive to greet the park’s inhabitants before returning for breakfast.

Another game drive graces the park as you exit, en route to Tsavo East. Arriving in the afternoon, embark on a safari across its expansive territory, scanning for both large and small game.

As the sun sets and the park cools down, enjoy a relaxed drive to your Tsavo East accommodation, where a tranquil dinner awaits.
