Embarking on a journey to support disadvantaged communities in Kenya not only allows you to connect with local people but also provides a meaningful way for travelers to contribute to poverty alleviation.

Today’s adventure takes you to a children’s center on the outskirts of Nairobi, a project supported by One Horizon. Here, you’ll witness the positive impact of your visit as the center provides daily meals to children in need. You’ll lend a helping hand in preparing and distributing nutritious food, and in return, you’ll receive heartwarming smiles and gain insight into how communities come together to support the most vulnerable.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Venture to a developing area west of Nairobi to visit the Women’s Empowerment Centre, another commendable initiative backed by One Horizon. Here, local women undergo an 18-month program that equips them with trade and entrepreneurial skills, enabling them to establish their businesses. The results have been nothing short of remarkable: mothers lift themselves out of poverty, keep their families intact, and evolve into self-sufficient entrepreneurs and community leaders. Meet these resilient women, learn from their inspiring journeys, and join them for a team dinner at a local restaurant this evening.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Embark on a westward journey from Nairobi to the enchanting Lake Naivasha, Kenya’s pristine freshwater lake bordered by serene grassy banks and lush papyrus. En route, pause at a roadside viewpoint to marvel at the breathtaking vistas of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Upon arrival at a picturesque lakeside lodge nestled amidst expansive grounds dotted with acacia trees, you might catch glimpses of antelopes or vervet monkeys. Embark on a small boat excursion to observe the thriving hippo pods and abundant birdlife that grace Lake Naivasha’s waters. Then, relish a delectable, unhurried lunch at the lodge, followed by a leisurely swim in the pool. As the afternoon unfolds, return to Nairobi.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Kenyan grandmothers play a pivotal role in maintaining families during challenging economic times. Today, visit a local grandmother’s pig farm and discover how pig husbandry provides sustenance and financial support. Witness the ingenious use of a bio-gas system, which transforms waste into energy to power homes. This is another admirable One Horizon project, empowering grandmothers through small-scale farming. Share a cup of local tea with these remarkable women, partake in joyful singing and dancing, and listen to their inspiring stories of resilience. In the evening, gather for a team dinner at a local restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today, immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Maasai people as an honorary Maasai guest. Visit a Maasai family in their traditional village, where generations have preserved the Maasai way of life. Begin with a warm welcome of song and dance, followed by the opportunity to be adorned in traditional Maasai shuka cloth or ‘African blanket’ by the wife of a village elder. Engage with the male children of the family, young morans, who will teach you traditional spear-throwing techniques and survival skills in the bush. Listen to captivating folklore stories shared by Maasai elders, gaining a deeper understanding of their heritage.
